May 20, 2008:

The 3rd Tuesday of May

Tuesday Night Cafe is happening tomorrow night! With more funk and flavor to help you cool down as you enjoy the downtown dusk. Lots of notable performers this week:
- Jumakae comes to us from Long Beach with her special blend of improvised vocals and progressive lyricism
- ANT steps out from behind the audio mixer and on to the stage, with a special solo set
- Jade Ross returns with her brand of new school soul and jay dropping vocals

Tomorrow will also feature the debut of the rotating Tuesday Night Resident DJ crew. First up will be long time TN family member DJ Waxstyles.

This show is once again at the Aratani Courtyard. Enjoy the spam musubi and Sapporo from the cafe next door!

A Tuesday of Epic Proportions

After a long two week break, the Tuesday Night Cafe has come back around. There are a few developments this week that make this edition truly special:
- This is the first outdoor show of the season, as the Cafe returns to the Aratani Courtyard
- Longtime favorites David Tran and the Fighting Cocks will be performing and a special collaboration between DJ Ant, DJ op+imis+, and Shin Kawasaki is happening
- DJ op+imis+ helms his final show as resident Tuesday Night DJ. He is moving to greener northern pastures, so make sure to buy him a beer and wish him well!

This show is not at Lost Souls Cafe, but once again at the Aratani Courtyard. You might be missing Lost Souls' sandwiches and ube shakes but now you can enjoy spam musubi and Sapporo.

Tuesday Night is here

Once again on this third Tuesday of the month, The Tuesday Night Cafe returns for another great evening of art and expression. Whereas the last episode featured a lot of longtime TNC favorites, this week features a lot of fresh names some people may not be familiar with. Janet Cruz, Jason Oymun Fong, Kiki Inomata, and Liane Tominaga are just some of the exciting talent coming by, and as always the Open Mic will be available.

Don't forget that this show will at Lost Souls Cafe, NOT at the usual Aratani Courtyard/Union Center for the Arts (in front of East West Players). Enjoy selections from their unique menu or take advantage of their free wi-fi while you take in this Tuesday Night's entertainment.

Tuesday Nights at the Cafe Premieres Next Week!

The time has finally come. After a cold fall and winter, the Tuesday Night season is ready to begin again. The first show is headlined by the always impressive Burmah Flores. For those not familiar with the Burmah brothers, go here for some sample songs and info. Their music is best described exactly as how they are categorized on myspace: equal parts Indie, Soul, and Hyphy. The rest of the show's acts are rounded out by Apryle Dalmacio, Ryan Tong & June Kaesith, Sue Jin and Kristina Wong. Traci will make some sort of surprise appearance from thousands of miles away, and Johneric Concordia and DJ op+imis+ will resume the hosting and music duties respectively. And if you have some talent that you would like to share, sign up for the Open Mic.

Don't forget that the first few shows will at Lost Souls Cafe, NOT at the usual East West Players courtyard.

Due to the way Venus has been lining up with Orion's belt lately, we have decided to move Midtones to the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the week. OK, I'm kidding about the stars but I'm very serius about bringing you some great music and even greater vibes on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. LinoType will make a return to finish off some crazy looping improv stuff we got into last week. Bolohead will come through with his ukulele. Who's Bolohead? Well, he's a big bald-headed Hawaiian friend of mine who's trained to fight and plays a killer ukulele. He has a real name but he wants to be called Bolohead....I'm not gonna argue. Turntables, a keyboard and an ukulele....Hmmm....what's this gonna sound like?

The Tuesday Night Cafe & The Connector Project - an effort to GROW.

It's TIME! You've seen the kind of energy we've built together...now we are ready for MORE.

Hey everyone - We are fast approaching our 10th year of Tuesday Night programming! Thanks to the community we've all built, we realize how much we've grown...how powerful, exciting, and important it is to create time and space with each other on a regular, sustained basis...

- creating time & space for artistic expression in L.A. and API communities, for cultural/social/political awareness, with opportunities for involvement & action, and for collaboration and real relationship-building.

***and YOU can make an even larger contribution

for the Tuesday Night Cafe Project -> Make a tax-deductible donation now!

We now have the energy and the people-power to build more programming and connect with more people in Los Angeles and way beyond - youth, other artists, and communities of consciousness everywhere, literally.

BUT we need the funds to do it. Everyone is 9 years older than when we started this, and we understand this can not be a volunteer effort for us forever.

With GROWTH, what will we DO? ->
-> Keep hosting great and greater 1st & 3rd Tuesday Night Cafe shows in Downtown LA and Little Tokyo. - keeping the Family-vibe while always trying to improve what we bring in.

-> Build a new website to support the growth of our
1) 1st & 3rd shows; 2) Tuesday Night-TV segments; 3) KAT-Radio podcasting; 4) ongoing and new Partnerships; 5) Feature Artist video and audio documentation efforts; 6) Fundraising efforts; and much more...!
(launch in Spring 2008)

-> Connect youth and artists with each other through our Youth-Connect Workshop and survey & document process to assess, build awareness, and do our part to connect youth-driven and youth-focused efforts throughout the city.
(launch in Fall 2008)

-> Build a variety of programs with our newest programming site and partner, The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena.

-> Build Our Capacity!! - Take our organization to the next level, from an all-volunteer effort to a sustainable organization with an actual infrastructure(!) and some paid-staff (!!!).

***and YOU can make a huge difference -> Make a tax-deductible donation now

Out of over 4,600 grants, The Connector Project proposal made it to the Top 100.
We won't know until February 2008 if we will make the Top 20 to receive $10,000, but we do have a Widget from the Case Foundation to manage some donations on our own!!
You can read all kinds of proposal details and see photos and videos.

Check it out and Please DONATE NOW!
